USAID Office of Population and Reproductive Health Awards Grant to Sonke Gender Justice Network to Strengthen Gender Equality and Family Planning in Sub-Saharan Africa
On behalf of the U.S. Agency for International Development’s (USAID) Office of Population and Reproductive Health (PRH), Advancing Partners & Communities (APC) has awarded a grant to the Sonke Gender Justice Network to strengthen gender equality and family planning in sub-Saharan Africa. APC supports the expansion of family planning services as part of improving the overall health of communities, especially women and girls. This award is intended to increase Sonke’s capacity to provide technical assistance on gender and reproductive health throughout sub-Saharan Africa.
Founded in 2006, the Sonke Gender Justice Network is a South African-based nongovernmental organization (NGO) that works with government, civil society, and citizen groups in nine provinces in South Africa and in 15 countries across Southern, East, Central and West Africa to prevent domestic and sexual violence, reduce the spread and impact of HIV and AIDS, enhance sexual and reproductive health, and promote gender equality and human rights. Sonke has an expanding presence on the African continent and a growing international profile through its involvement with the United Nations and a range of other international networks and affiliates.
As part of this award, APC will help strengthen Sonke’s capacity to become a resource in the region for gender integration in family planning. Sonke will be positioned to provide technical assistance and training for family planning programs to strengthen human resources, financial management, and monitoring and evaluation systems. The goal of this support is to promote gender equality and improve access to and use of family planning and reproductive health services.
